Screen Studio Pricing 2026: Plans, Lifetime License & Cost

Screen Studio's two plans unlock every feature plus shareable links, so there are no tiers to compare. Team seats cost the same per user, and students get 40% off. New buyers can no longer get a one-time license (the last one sold for $229 with a year of updates), but licenses bought before the change still work. Screen Studio runs only on macOS. Every Screen Studio fact below comes from screen.studio itself (its pricing section, FAQ, guide, changelog and terms), checked on September 29, 2026, and we link the sources so you can check them yourself.

This is for three kinds of reader. You're pricing Screen Studio before you buy. You own a legacy license and want to know what you still get. Does Screen Studio have a lifetime license?

No, not for new customers. Screen Studio's own FAQ says that "purchasing one-time licenses was possible in the past, but is no longer available for new purchases." If you bought one, it's still valid, and if your update window has run out you can renew it to get current updates again. As of September 2026, new buyers choose between the $29 monthly and $108 yearly subscriptions.

One detail most pricing pages miss: the old license never came with lifetime updates. In August 2025 the $229 "Pay once" option was described as "your copy forever & one year of updates," with an optional $109 renewal for each further year. So a "Screen Studio lifetime deal" always meant keeping the version you had, not getting every future version.

Screen Studio pricing 2026: plans and prices

Pricing is on the screen.studio homepage (the site has no separate pricing page), plus a teams page. Prices are in USD, before tax, checked on September 29, 2026.

Paying yearly costs 69% less than paying monthly for twelve months ($108 against $348). Monthly only makes sense if you need Screen Studio for 3 months a year or less: 3 months cost $87, and month 4 takes you past the price of the whole yearly plan.

Devices and discounts. The current pricing section doesn't list a device limit, and Screen Studio's terms say the number of devices is set by your order (the 2025 plans allowed three personal Macs). The only discount on screen.studio is the 40% education discount; we didn't find an official public coupon as of September 2026.

What happened to the lifetime license

Screen Studio used to sell mainly pay-once licenses. It raised the one-time price over time, added a yearly subscription, and then dropped the one-time option. Here's the record, from archived copies of screen.studio and news coverage of the change.

According to AlternativeTo's report, the founder called the $229 price "a mistake with low adoption" and pointed to running a bootstrapped five-person team that depends on recurring revenue. That reasoning is common among small software companies. It's also why people searching for a "Screen Studio lifetime" deal end up looking at other tools.

If you own a legacy license

• It keeps working. The FAQ says: "Your license is of course still valid."
• Updates: when the change was announced, existing one-time buyers were reportedly given two extra years of free updates, through September 2027 according to AlternativeTo. Screen Studio's FAQ doesn't give a date, so check your license status in the dashboard.
• Renewal: if your update access has expired, the FAQ says you can renew at any time. We couldn't see the current renewal price, because the renew page checks your license before it shows anything.
• Activation: legacy licenses activate with a license key. The guide notes that the key field "is only applicable for legacy one-time purchase licenses."
• New Mac: disconnect the old device from the dashboard's Device tab, then activate on the new one.

What every Screen Studio plan includes

There are no feature tiers, so the monthly and yearly plans get the same app. Here are the features that matter for the price question, taken from Screen Studio's homepage and guide:

• Automatic zoom on clicks, plus manual zooms you place yourself. The auto zoom follows click positions, so a stretch with no clicks gets no automatic target.
• Cursor effects: smoothed movement, cursor size changes after recording, and adjustable motion blur on the cursor, zooms and pans.
• Webcam, microphone and system audio recording, with camera layouts.
• Captions generated on your Mac with Whisper models, or with Apple Speech Recognition on macOS 26 and later.
• iPhone and iPad recording over USB, with device frames.
• Shareable links for recordings up to 30 minutes long, with comments and a view counter (both added in late 2025).
• Export to MP4 or GIF at up to 4K and 60fps, with presets and a vertical mode.
• Masking for sensitive data, and detection of typing sections so you can speed them up.

On privacy, the FAQ says recordings are stored and processed on your computer, transcription runs locally, and you can opt out of usage analytics. Shareable links do upload the video you share, which is the point of them, and you only use them when you choose to.

Is Screen Studio free? Free use, refunds and cancelling

You can use Screen Studio for free, but you can't export without a plan. The download page says: "If you don't have an active plan, you can still use all the features except for exporting video files." No time limit is mentioned, so treat it as an open-ended trial. Record your real workflow, edit it, and pay only when you're ready to export.

• Refunds: the subscription terms say "Fees are non-refundable." That's why testing everything before you pay matters.
• Cancelling: you can cancel at any time, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current term. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel.
• Switching plans: changing an annual plan partway through is prorated by the days left.
• After cancelling: projects stay on your Mac, but exporting needs an active plan again.

System requirements: Mac only

Screen Studio needs macOS Ventura 13.1 or later. An Apple M1 or later is recommended, and on Intel the requirements page lists MacBook Pro 2018 or later and MacBook Air 2020 or later, with at least 8 GB of RAM. Asked whether a Windows version is ready, the FAQ says: "No, and there are no near-future plans to add Windows support." What Screen Studio costs over 1, 2 and 3 years

The monthly price is what people remember, but what you actually pay depends on how many years you keep recording. Here's Screen Studio next to the one-time and cheaper-subscription tools we could verify. All prices are as of September 2026, before tax.

The gap grows every year you keep recording: a subscription never stops, and it hurts most on the monthly plan or when the app sits unused for months between launches while you keep paying.

Is Screen Studio worth it? A decision framework

For most demo makers, no: ZoomCap does the core job (automatic zoom, a clean background, captions, export up to 4K) for $29 once. Screen Studio is worth $108 a year only if you record at least a few times a month and use one of its extras: iPhone or iPad recording, hosted share links with comments, or motion blur. Here's how that plays out by user type.

• Founders with one launch video: ZoomCap Lifetime. It costs the same as one month of Screen Studio ($29), and you keep it: re-exporting the video next quarter costs nothing more.
• Developers recording terminals and IDEs: ZoomCap. Screen Studio's auto zoom follows clicks, and a terminal demo has almost none. It spots typing, but only to offer speeding it up. ZoomCap's CLI triggers zooms from bursts of typing, on macOS and Linux X11.
• Anyone whose screen shows customer data or unreleased features: ZoomCap. Recordings are never uploaded, and there is no share-link upload to switch off.
• Students and teachers: ZoomCap. Screen Studio's 40% education discount brings the yearly plan to $64.80 a year; ZoomCap Lifetime is $29 once.
• Mobile app teams: Screen Studio fits better. Recording an iPhone or iPad over USB with a device frame is built in, and ZoomCap doesn't do it.
• Weekly creators who want motion blur: Screen Studio fits better, on the yearly plan ($9 a month).
• Teams sharing async updates: probably not Screen Studio. At $9 per user per month you pay for an editing tool. If what you really want is quick share links with viewer analytics, look at cloud-first tools like Tella or Cap Pro.

Cheaper Screen Studio alternatives (and what you give up)

Every tool below zooms automatically and costs less than Screen Studio's yearly plan ($324) over three years. They are sorted by 3-year cost, using the plan with no watermark or export cap. Prices were checked on each vendor's own site on September 29, 2026; we did not test the paid apps hands-on, so their tradeoffs are as the vendors describe them.

ZoomCap is our pick from this table: among one-time licenses only Glidesmith (Mac only, early access) matches its $29, and ZoomCap adds typing zoom, a Linux CLI and a browser recorder that runs on Windows. If the budget is exactly $0, OpenScreen and Recordly are free and open source, and Tight Studio's free plan exports without a watermark on Apple Silicon Macs.

Watch the word "lifetime" on every one of these. FocuSee's one-time license covers the 2.x version only. CursorFlow's one-time license includes one year of updates. Common mistakes when paying for Screen Studio

1. Reading "lifetime" as lifetime updates. Screen Studio's old license, CursorFlow's and FocuSee's one-time options all limit updates. Read the line under the price.
2. Staying on the monthly plan past month 3. From month 4, the monthly plan costs more than a whole year.
3. Cancelling before your final export. Export every cut and aspect ratio you'll need (landscape for the site, vertical for social) before the term ends.
4. Paying before testing on your own Mac. Fees are non-refundable, but every feature except export is free. If you're on an Intel Mac, check the model list first.
5. Buying seats for people who only watch. Viewers of a shareable link watch it in their browser, so only the people making videos need a plan.
6. Forgetting what the zoom will magnify. Auto zoom blows up whatever you click: a password manager pop-up, an API key field, a customer's email. Close unrelated tabs, silence notifications, record in a demo account, and use the masking tool if anything slips through.

When you don't need a paid recorder at all

• Explaining one setting: a screenshot with an arrow is faster to make and faster to read than a video.

Its terminal recorder zooms on clicks and on bursts of typing, and Lifetime costs $29 once, or $12.49 a month on Pro: $295 less than Screen Studio's yearly plan over three years. The free plan is the browser recorder and editor (2 exports a month, watermarked, commercial use allowed), where you place zooms by hand.
